Rizly Illyas elected Sri Lanka Rugby President
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) was held on 29th August 2020 in Colombo. Former Deputy President Mr Rizly Illyas was elected as the new Sri Lanka Rugby President.
Mr Illyas has vast experience in administration and has also served as the Honorary Secretary of Sri Lanka Rugby. He was the second-in-command in the previous set up, and played his rugby at St. Peter’s College Colombo, Petersons Rugby Club and the Colombo Gymkhana Club.
Newly elected Sri Lanka Rugby President Mr Illyas Speaking to Asia Rugby said, “I want to make a change in the system and work very closely with all the stakeholders. We will implement new strategies in our sevens and fifteens rugby.”
Sevens being an Olympic sport, Mr Illyas further stated, “Sri Lanka Rugby will work with some of the top coaches in the world.”
He also pointed out that Sri Lanka Rugby needs to establish a sustainable high-performance unit, and most importantly will look into contracting a squad of seven’s players under Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union, setting up high-performance facilities and making the players professionals.
