Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2021 Update
Asia Rugby announces the cancellation of the South Korea leg of the Asia Rugby Men’s and Women’s Sevens Series. The event was the first leg of the three-leg series for 2021.
Upon a continuous dialogue between Asia Rugby, South Korea Rugby Union and the participating unions, the difficult decision was taken as a result of the pandemic-related challenges faced by the participating unions; particularly consequent to continual uncertainty of travel restrictions.
Asia Rugby sought input from World Rugby in the event of non-confirmations from Participating Unions, to which World Rugby responded by saying that, in such a situation, cancelling would be “practical and sensible.”
World Rugby earlier announced the cancellation of the HSBC 7s series rounds in Hong Kong, Langford, London, and Paris.
The remaining two legs of the Asia Rugby Men’s and Women’s Sevens Series will both be held in the United Arab Emirates in November 2021 .as well as Asia Rugby Men’s and Women’s 15s Championships have all been greenlighted to go ahead as per the calendar since they serve as Asian qualifiers for the upcoming 15s and 7s Rugby World Cups.
In accordance with Asia Rugby’s Return To Play strategy, preparations for the Sub-Regional 7s tournaments announced earlier are in full swing with the first tournament to be hosted by the Lebanese Rugby Union Federation in Beirut, Lebanon, in September 2021.
Rugby Sevens inclusion and success at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has set up an exciting time for the Sevens game with the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town, Asian Games and Youth Asian Games in China, and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, all looming ahead.
