World Rugby has appointed Neil Hallett as its first Independent Ethics Officer, supporting the adoption of the international federation’s new Integrity Code, which was a key outcome of its recent wide-ranging and independent-led governance review.
Hallett has a wealth of experience in the role, having served in the New Zealand Police for 35 years, retiring in 2020 as a Detective Inspector. He also has significant athletic and intellectual experience, having worked in a variety of sports, including three World Championships in various sports in New Zealand.
In his role, Hallett will operate independently of World Rugby and his responsibilities will include evaluating the suitability of individuals who may be appointed World Rugby officials and investigating potential violations of the Integrity Code.
The new Integrity Code reflects best-practice in corporate and sporting governance and underscores World Rugby’s strategic mission to uphold the integrity of the sport.
